Health & Wellness with Chiropractic & Acupuncture

doctor of chiropracticThe doctor of chiropractic analyzes your body for vertebral subluxation, a severe form of spine and nerve stress, using her hands and other analysis tools, she then corrects or removes any spinal nerve stress using spinal adjustment techniques.

Subluxations come from stress. It may occur in infancy from a difficult birth or from childhood falls. Later in life, emotional tension or stress can gradually damage your spine or violent injuries from automobile accidents or sports can suddenly put you “out of whack”. A subluxation is “a bone out of place in your spine putting pressure on a nerve(s)”.

Nearly everyone eventually gets spinal nerve stress and is affected by subluxations. It is a “hidden epidemic” and it is for that reason that we all need to have our spines checked for this condition by a doctor of chiropractic, just as we get our eyes, teeth and blood pressure checked. When there is pressure on a nerve that nerve has decreased transmission and that leads to decreased function of organs, muscles and tissues of the body.

The first chiropractic patient was treated in 1895. Dr. D.D. Palmer, he performed the first chiropractic “spinal adjustment” on his deaf janitor, Harvey Lilard. Lilard’s hearing returned and Plamer thought he had discovered a cure for deafness.  But as patients with digestive troubles, sciatica, menstrual trouble, migraine headaches, epilepsy, heart problems, back pain and may other conditions responded to spinal care, Palmer realized that he had discovered something more far-reaching indeed.

ChiropractorsChiropractors perform treatments by working with the bones to relieve nerves of the spinal column and spinal cord respectively. Chiropractors spend years of highly specialized training in order to locate where misplaced spinal vertebrae are impinging the nerves which travel through the spinal cord and out to the muscles, organs and glands of the body. After locating the vertebrae, impinging the nerves (subluxations) the chiropractor, using highly specialized techniques, is able to replace the misplaced vertebrae and release pressure on the nerves. That is called a spinal adjustment. It also translates to extremities and adjusting nerves impinged all throughout the body.

You can receive chiropractic treatments even if under medical care.  Having your spinal nerve stress corrected is important no matter what other type of care you’re receiving. You can have your spinal column checked for vertebral subluxations by a doctor of chiropractic and still visit a doctor of homeopathy, naturopathy, osteopathy or medicine. M.D.’s and other healers cannot tell if your suffering from spinal nerve stress (vertebral subluxations) and are not trained in correcting it, only a qualified chiropractor can, and often adjustments can relieve many symptoms and help avoid extra medical visits. That is why we are considered a portal of entry physician to help determine the best direction of care for you.

In Chiropractic there are other significant factors besides vertebral adjusting, including five laws to obey for those who desire health and longevity: 1) Proper nutrition; 2) Adequate rest; 3) Moderate exercise; 4) A positive mental attitude; 5) Proper nerve supply (most importantly).

chiropractic careAll kinds of conditions are treated with chiropractic care, such as colds, ear infections, PMS, spinal and disc problems, arthritis, insomnia, stress, vision problems, headaches, allergies, bedwetting, colic, high blood pressure, – the list is long!

The goal of chiropractic treatment is not the treatment of disease but rather the enhancement of health through the reduction of spinal nerve stress (vertebral subluxation complex).

The above list may seem long as though chiropractic were a Panacea (a solution or remedy for all difficulties or diseases). The truth is that most textbooks list over two hundred diseases. Please be mindful of the fact that chiropractic care is not like one drug used for one condition, but is a complete healing art within itself, concerned with the systems of the body such as nervous, circulatory, digestive, respiratory, eliminatory, reproductive, hormonal, musculoskeletal, etc., and seeks to correct health problems within those systems.

No matter what disease or condition you have, you can benefit from a healthy spine. Spinal health is more important for your overall healing than even proper nutrition. Proper transmission of nerve flow from the brain and spinal cord to every functioning organ and tissue of the body is elemental in fighting disease and ultimate function of every cell of the body. A healthy spine is absolutely essential. In some people, it is a major factor and can make the difference between a life of health, strength and vitality or a life of disease, weakness and disability.

What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an over 5,000 year old Chinese system of natural healing (No drugs… No surgery), which is concerned with restoring proper energy flow to the organs, glands and tissues of the body on the premise that most diseases are the result of malfunction due to disrupted energies. (This is HUGE in your body being able to heal internally w/o drugs).
Where does the interruption of energy flow occur?
In either or both locations:

(1) In the channels of energy flow, which are located throughout the body, just beneath the skin surface – channels of energy are associated and connected to all of the vital internal organs. If one is out of balance it throw all out of balance and disease is able to take over.

(2) In the spinal column where vertebrae may become misaligned, thereby compressing vital nerves as they exit the spinal cord and feed over 200,000 nerve fibers that then become decreased and deficient in nerve flow leading to decreased function.

What are other causes of disease besides those associated with the interface of the transmission of energy flow?
They include psychosomatic states, hereditary factors, poisons, adverse environmental conditions, injury, germs, malnutrition, etc…, these are all disease producing.
How we detect the disturbance in energy flow within a patient?
By many methods, including certain signs, symptoms, pain spots, organ reflex points, and by pulse or instrumental findings.
How are acupuncture treatments performed?
First, the related points are determined based on the need for each patient.  Then they are treated by one of over thirty methods of stimulation some of which are:

  1. Long needle insertion (especially done in acupuncture anesthesia for surgery)
  2. Short needle penetration
  3. Non-piercing needles (most commonly used in our office)
  4. Finger tip pressure (called shishin or “finger needles”)
  5. Metallic balls taped to the points (to help you restimulate points of importance to your condition)
  6. Electrical stimulation (Most Commonly used in our office w/o any pain or needle insertion)
  7. Moxibustion (the burning of herbs over the points) – Very potent and used only on severe case needs

Note: The non-piercing needle (teishin) that we use is very popular because the technique is practically painless, there is no blood, no danger of infection, and results are equal to, if not better than other techniques. the Teishin is a spring supported hand held instrument to treat acupressure points for stimulation of the energy flow to equalize the body systems.

What are conditions commonly treated by acupuncture?
Textbook listed conditions run into the hundreds.  Typical ailments usually responding to acupuncture health care includes: neuralgias, headaches, trigeminal neuralgia (TMJ), tics, spasms, muscular rheumatism, neuralgia of the shoulders and arm, tennis elbow, osteoarthritis, rheumatism, ulcers, stomach problems, diarrhea, hepatitis, asthma, bronchitis, shortness of breath, coughs, certain types of heart trouble, abnormal blood pressure, hemorrhoids, lumbago, bladder irritation, bed wetting, certain kidney problems, female disorders, impotence, glaucoma (sometimes), weak eyesight, hay fever, loss of smell, tonsillitis, loss of hearing, skin conditions, and even nervous or psychiatric factors based on the fact that often mental problems arise from physical disorders.

The above list may seem long as though acupuncture were a Panacea (a solution or remedy for all difficulties or diseases).  The truth is that most textbooks list over two hundred diseases.  Please be mindful of the fact that acupuncture is not like one drug used for one condition. On the contrary, it is a complete healing art within itself, concerned with the systems of the body such as nervous, circulatory, digestive, respiratory, eliminatory, reproductive, hormonal, musculoskeletal, etc., and seeks to correct health.

Out of 10 patients accepted for acupuncture health care, how many usually respond favorably?
On the average, 8 or 10. Two out of ten fail to respond favorably for a variety of reasons. Advanced age, severity of the condition, irreversible tissue damage, etc., these are deterrents to recovery.
Are spinal adjusting treatments necessary with acupuncture?
Absolutely. Spinal adjusting is part of acupuncture healthcare. We have to take pressure off the nerve first to allow ultimate transmission to all organs and tissues relates to that nerve, then balance the bodies energy systems which are also related to all the body organs in order to allow the ultimate transmission of energy throughout the body. This then allows the body to fight disease at it’s most powerful reducing the need to seek temporary solutions to better health.
Does acupuncture have another name?
In fact the word “Acupuncture” is incorrect because it implies needles only. The proper wording is “Meridian Therapy”, or Ching Lo Chi Liao in Chinese. It was named “acupuncture” in the 16th century by Portuguese sailors who knew no better.  The wrong name stuck. Simply but we don’t have to puncture the skin to treat the bodies acupuncture points.
To what kind of doctor should one go for "portal or entry" health care?
Any doctor (chiropractor, medical, or osteopath) who has had the proper training.

Any doctor who has not had the proper training is pretending to know something he/she does not, may have attended a weekend seminar and by that definition is a quack. Just because a doctor happens to have a chiropractic, medical, physical therapy or osteopathic degree does not mean he/she is qualified to do acupuncture. If he/she engages in practice, he/she is guilty of acupuncture malpractice. He/she must receive qualified training and pass exams to certify competence. This protects the public.

In Acupuncture (Meridian Therapy) are there other significant factors besides skin point stimulation and vertebral adjusting?
Yes, there are a four laws to obey for those who desire health and longevity:

  1. Proper nutrition;
  2. Adequate rest;
  3. Moderate exercise’
  4. A positive mental attitude.
Has any research, other than empirical, been conducted?
Meridian therapy is natural healing art based on knowledge of another biological principal new only to the western world. Soviet scientists Nijinsky and Vorobiev have proven the premise of ancient Chinese healing by localizing meridian points with a Wheatstone bridge, using an alternating current to prevent polarization. This was fed by a generator of sonic frequency and recorded on a cathode ray oscillograph. When the electrode touched an active acupuncture point the amplitude of the wave on the oscillograph diminished. Best results were derived from frequencies of a few kilohertz and voltage from several millivolts to 4 volts.

The Russians have already done it many times over.

We should welcome new knowledge as it is found… that’s what science is all about = advancements in treatments and technology.
